The Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is the assessment process to recognise occupational competence for people who have been working as an electrician for over 3 years (domestic) or over 5 years (installation and maintenance), but haven’t been able to complete an apprenticeship, achieve an equivalent, recognised Level 3 vocational qualification or have qualifications from outside of the UK.
Achievement of the Experienced Worker Assessments and its end assessment of competence—the AM2E or AM2ED—meets the criteria for an ECS gold card application. It’s also recognised in the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification as equivalent to an industry apprenticeship.
Experienced Worker Assessment Routes
The EWA is not a shortcut to getting qualified. Those without the range of competence and duration of industry experience after training will not have the skills or knowledge needed to successfully complete the assessment.
There are two EWA routes:
- C&G 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment (Installation and Maintenance)
- C&G 2347 Experienced Worker Assessment (Domestic).Â
EWA routes are based on the same content as the industry apprenticeships, so both new entrants and existing workers are assessed and accredited against the same industry standard.

C&G 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment
Who is this assessment for?
To be eligible for the C&G 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment you should have:
- A minimum of 5 years experience in the electrical industry working across the range of activities set out in the Skills Scan.
- A minimum of Level 2 electrical qualification achieved prior to starting the qualification, or equivalent qualification from outside the UK
To complete you will need to:
- Complete a Skills Scan via an initial assessment with a member of our team.
- Have, or complete an up-to-date Wiring Regulations qualification
- Have, or complete an Initial Verification Inspection and Testing Qualification such as the C&G 2391-52
- Complete the EWA Level 3 performance units
- Complete an AM2E assessment of competence *
Achievement of the C&G 2347 Installation & Maintenance Electrician EWA and its assessment of competence—the AM2E*—meets the criteria for an ECS Electrician gold card application. It will be recognised in the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification as equivalent to the Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship.
* The AM2E will need to be booked separately with a NET centre on completion of this qualification.
C&G 2347 Domestic Experienced Worker Assessment
Who is this assessment for?
The Domestic Electrician EWA is an assessment process against the industry standard – it is not a shortcut to qualified status. To be eligible for the assessment you should have:
- A minimum of 3 years experience as a practising domestic electrician working across the range of activities set out in the Skills Scan.
- A minimum of Level 2 electrical qualification achieved prior to starting the qualification, or equivalent qualification from outside the UK
To complete this qualification you will need to:
- Complete a Skills Scan via an initial assessment with a member of our team.
- Have, or complete an up-to-date Wiring Regulations qualification
- Have, or complete an Initial Verification Inspection and Testing Qualification such as the C&G 2391-52
- Complete the EWA Level 3 performance units
- Complete an AM2ED assessment of competence *
Achievement of the Domestic Electrician EWA and its assessment of competence—the AM2ED—meets the criteria for an ECS Domestic Electrician gold card application. It will be recognised in the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification as equivalent to the Domestic Electrician apprenticeship.

Installation and Maintenance Electrician

- A minimum of Level 2 electrical qualification achieved prior to starting the qualification, or equivalent qualification from outside the UK

- Complete a Skills Scan via an initial assessment with a member of our team.
- Have, or complete an up-to-date Wiring Regulations qualification
- Have, or complete an Initial Verification Inspection and Testing Qualification such as the C&G 2391-52
