Trade Skills 4U 5357 NVQ
The 5357 Electrical NVQ Pathway Qualification is designed for learners who have completed a recognised Level 2 and Level 3 electrical qualification, such as the City & Guilds 2365, 2366, 8202 or EAL equivalent qualifications, and are now developing their skills within the electrical industry.
Learners should generally plan on the basis that this is a minimum two-year programme, allowing sufficient time to develop and demonstrate competence across a broad range of electrical installation activities before progressing to the final AM2P competence assessment.
Where relevant industry experience has been gained prior to enrolment, a reduced duration may be considered. Any reduction must be supported by evidence and approved through the appropriate quality assurance process.
This qualification may not be suitable if:
If you are unsure which route is right for you, our team can help determine the most appropriate pathway based on your qualifications and industry experience.
The 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification is designed for learners developing occupational competence within the electrical industry. Assessment is carried out through workplace evidence, including observations, professional discussions, witness testimony and work-based documentation.
Current industry requirements expect learners to gain approximately two years of relevant industry experience before progressing to the final competence assessment. For this reason, learners should generally plan on the basis that the 5357 is a minimum two-year programme.
Can learners complete sooner?
Potentially. Learners with previous relevant industry experience may be considered for earlier progression.
Examples may include:
Any reduction in duration is considered on a case-by-case basis, requires supporting evidence and must be approved through the quality assurance process. As approval cannot be guaranteed, learners should initially plan for a minimum two-year journey.
The AM2P is the final competence assessment associated with the 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification.
Unlike the previous 2357 NVQ, the AM2P is not included as a mandatory unit within the qualification itself and must be completed separately through a NET-approved AM2 assessment centre.
Learner Responsibilities
Learners are responsible for:
Please note that AM2P assessment fees are not included within the cost of this qualification.
The 5357 Electrical NVQ Pathway Qualification is designed to recognise previous learning through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The additional requirements you may need to complete will depend on the qualifications you currently hold.
Learners progressing from City & Guilds 2366 qualifications can generally progress directly onto the 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification and begin completing the workplace performance outcomes, with no additional bridging requirements currently identified.
Learners progressing from City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications will be required to complete an additional Bridging Unit covering the planning and overseeing of work activities.
Revision materials will be provided and the assessment can be completed either remotely or at one of our training centres.
Learners progressing from City & Guilds 8202 qualifications will be required to complete additional Inspection & Testing Bridging Units. These include online and written assessments designed to ensure alignment with the occupational standard.
Learners will also complete an Inspection & Testing Skills Scan whilst on programme. Where significant knowledge gaps are identified, additional Inspection & Testing training may be recommended. Any additional training required may incur an additional fee.
Learners holding EAL qualifications may be eligible for RPL. Requirements will vary depending on the qualification held and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
All learners must hold a current Wiring Regulations qualification before completing the programme.
Accepted qualifications include:
Please note that the Wiring Regulations qualification is already included within the City & Guilds 2366 qualification and therefore does not need to be achieved separately by learners progressing from this route.
Where a learner does not already hold a recognised Wiring Regulations qualification, this can be completed alongside the NVQ Pathway Qualification at an additional cost.
This keeps it simple, learner-friendly and avoids committing the website to detailed RPL rules that may change over time.

Yes. The City & Guilds 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification replaces the legacy 2357 NVQ and is aligned to the current Installation and Maintenance Electrician Occupational Standard.
The NVQ Pathway Qualification is the industry term commonly used for the City & Guilds 5357 qualification. It is the recognised occupational competence route for learners progressing towards Qualified Electrician status.
Yes. Most learners and employers still refer to the qualification as an Electrical NVQ, although industry bodies increasingly use the term NVQ Pathway Qualification.
Yes. The qualification requires workplace evidence and assessment activity. You must be working within the electrical industry and have access to suitable installation work.
Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for learners progressing from recognised electrical qualifications such as the City & Guilds 2365.
The 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment was originally developed around a previous apprenticeship framework that no longer fully reflects the structure of modern electrical training.
The 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification is a development route for learners building competence in industry.
Learners should generally plan on a two-year journey. Previous industry experience may be considered where appropriate evidence exists.
Potentially. Learners with significant previous industry experience may be considered for earlier progression, subject to evidence and approval through the quality assurance process.
The requirement has been introduced to ensure learners gain sufficient practical experience within the workplace before progressing to the final competence assessment.
The AM2P is the final competence assessment associated with the 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification route.
No. The AM2P is booked separately through a NET-approved assessment centre and is not included within the qualification fee.
The gateway application is the process used to confirm eligibility for the AM2P assessment. This must be submitted to your chosen NET-approved centre before your assessment can be booked.
Learners are responsible for ensuring that both qualification completion and gateway submission take place within the required timescales. Failure to do so may affect progression and require further discussion with the assessment centre.
The 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification and successful completion of the AM2P form part of the recognised route towards ECS Gold Card eligibility.
Funding opportunities may be available depending on your age, employment status and circumstances. Please speak to one of our course advisors for current information.
We would normally recommend completing your Level 2 and Level 3 electrical qualifications and securing relevant employment before applying for the 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification.
Possibly not. Learners with substantial industry experience may be better suited to the City & Guilds 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment. Our team can help determine the most appropriate route based on your experience.
