Who is the apprenticeship for?

To become an electrical apprentice, you will need to be employed in the electrical industry and be carrying out a suitable range of works to complete your knowledge and skills building under the supervision of a mentor. There are no upper age limits to becoming an apprentice; it is never too late to learn!

This electrical apprenticeship covers everything you need to be an installation or maintenance electrician, working in domestic, commercial and industrial installations. It is also fully funded meaning you won’t have to pay a penny. We can also help support your employer in ensuring they fully understand all the requirements and have everything in place to allow you to successfully complete this apprenticeship.

If you are looking to become an electrician, but don’t have employment remember you can start out with our 4 steps programme and if you find an employer we can flip you to a funded apprenticeship. This means you would no longer need to pay for your training.

Installation and Maintenance Electrician

There are two specialist units in this apprenticeship (installation or maintenance). Generally speaking electrical installation is the most popular, however depending on your employer and goals you can easily opt to complete the maintenance apprenticeship. We will discuss this with you when you apply.

Who is the Apprenticeship for?

To be on the funded learning (Apprenticeship) pathway specifically with Trade Skills 4U a candidate must:

Be 16 years old or older, there is no upper age limit.
Have been a UK resident for the previous three years and have the right to work in the UK.
You will need an employer before you can start the apprenticeship.
You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 Hours per week with a qualified electrician.
Ideally you will need to have 5 GCSE’s including Maths and English (Grades 9 to 4 or A-C). We will carry out an initial assessment to gauge your suitability for the programme.
If you do not hold the required GCSEs for Maths and English, initial assessments will be carried out and you will need to complete functional skills where you do not have evidence of Maths and/or English L2 on entry.

Course Dates, Timings & Funding

The time taken to complete an electrical apprenticeship can vary slightly based on your role and previous knowledge and experience. Usually, it will take take 3-4 years to complete with knowledge and skills building throughout this period.

You will not have to pay for your training and will be earning whilst you learn. Trade Skills 4U will work with you and your employer to ensure you work in a safe environment and your apprenticeship is successful in allowing you to achieve your potential.

Exams & Assessments

Completion of End-Point Assessment which is assessed by the AM2 at a centre local to you. We have access to a network of assessment centres across the UK.

Difference Between Domestic and Commercial Electricians

An electrician apprenticeship combines study and work experience that enables you to qualify as an electrician and start working. For electricians, this means working and learning on-the-job under the supervision of an experienced electrician while studying for a level 3 qualification.

Apprentice Electricians also earn a wage whilst they gain knowledge and develop their skills in the workplace working alongside an electrician as a mentor.

In order to start an apprenticeship you will need to be enrolled on an apprenticeship standard, which lists all the knowledge, skills and behaviours you will need to gain to be able to pass the apprenticeship.

As a level 3 programme we will want you to have maths and English at a minimum of Level 1. We will also carry out initial assessments to help us determine your level of maths and English and any help and support you may need will be agreed before you join the programme.

If you do not have level 2 English and maths, GCSE 4 or a C or above, you will need to complete functional skills. It is really important that you achieve any functional skills so that you can pass through the gateway to End Point Assessment (EPA)

It can take between 2 to 4 years dependent on previous qualifications gained to become an electrician. We can also recognise prior learning (RPL) which could reduce the length of your apprenticeship. We will explore this duding your initial assessments.

This will depend on your RPL, but typically over a 4 year apprenticeship for apprentices new to the electrical industry, you will study towards a recognised qualification C&G 5357. There will be a mixture of different types of learning including, in-centre face to face, virtual learning and e-learning modules.

You will complete knowledge exams, assignments and projects in centre over an 18 month block release period, along with building a portfolio of your skills with guidance and help from your allocated Training Officer in the workplace.

You will also need to complete any maths and/or English functional skills you have been enrolled on to be gateway ready.

Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate if they’re either:

aged under 19
aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship

Apprentices are entitled to the minimum wage for their age if they both:

are aged 19 or over
have completed the first year of their apprenticeship

You will need to complete the C&G 5357 qualification (knowledge and skills elements) and any functional skills if you do not have any exemptions (GCSE 4 or C or above) to be able to pass through the gateway and go on to End Point Assessment which is the AM2 for electricians. On successful completion of the AM2, you will have completed your apprenticeship and be issued with an Apprenticeship completion Certificate.

There are various steps you can take to further your career, you may want to become an inspection and Testing engineer, an electrical engineer or even a designer. You may even decide to start your own business one day! There is no end to where you can take your career.
