For many learners, completing the Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas is only one stage of their journey towards becoming a Qualified Electrician.
The City & Guilds 5357 Electrical NVQ Pathway Qualification is designed for learners who have completed their training and are now gaining practical experience within the industry. Learners must already be in employment or have access to meaningful work experience throughout the duration of their NVQ, allowing them to develop and demonstrate competence across a broad range of electrical installation activities.
The qualification replaces the legacy City & Guilds 2357 NVQ and adds the introduction of a new industry expectation around workplace experience. The purpose of this requirement is to ensure learners have sufficient opportunity to develop and demonstrate competence within a real working environment before progressing to the final competence assessment.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for learners who have already completed recognised qualifications such as the City & Guilds 2365 or equivalent, allowing them to focus on developing and evidencing occupational competence in the workplace.
Successful completion of the 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification provides progression towards the AM2P competence assessment and ultimately Qualified Electrician status and ECS Gold Card eligibility.
Please read all of the information below carefully before submitting your application, particularly the sections relating to industry experience requirements, gateway submissions and progression to AM2P.
The 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification is now the recognised occupational competence route for electricians progressing from training into industry.
Successful completion provides progression towards:
The qualification aligns to the current industry standard and replaces the previous 2357 qualification.
If you are unsure which route is right for you, our team can help determine the most appropriate pathway.
The 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification is designed as a development route for learners gaining occupational competence whilst employed in the electrical industry.
Unlike the Experienced Worker Assessment, which assesses existing competence, the 5357 is assessed primarily through workplace evidence, with assessment methods including observations, discussions, testimonials, accounts and certificates.
This is intended to support learners as they continue developing their skills through workplace experience. A dedicated assessor supports the learner throughout the qualification, ensuring evidence meets the requirements of the occupational standard.
Current industry requirements expect learners to gain approximately two years of relevant on-site experience before progressing to the final competence assessment.
For this reason, learners should generally plan on the basis that the 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification is a two-year programme.
Potentially.
Some learners may already have gained relevant industry experience before registering on the qualification.
Examples may include:
Where sufficient evidence exists, earlier progression may be considered.
However:
NET currently apply a maximum duration of 18 months for qualification completion and gateway submission.
This means learners must:
Both of these activities must take place within the permitted timeframe.
Trade Skills 4U will provide guidance and support throughout the process, however responsibility for gateway submission ultimately rests with the learner.
AM2P assessment fees are not included within the cost of this qualification.
Many learners entering the 5357 pathway have already completed recognised electrical qualifications.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows previous achievement to be recognised, reducing duplication and allowing learners to focus on demonstrating occupational competence in the workplace.
Qualifications commonly accepted for RPL include:
As part of the enrolment process, your assessor will carry out an Initial Assessment to identify any outstanding requirements and create a personalised assessment plan.
For most learners the journey follows the process below:
City & Guilds Training - Electrical
Once enrolled, you will be allocated a dedicated assessor who will support you throughout your qualification.
The 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification is assessed primarily through workplace evidence gathered during your normal day-to-day activities.
Assessment methods may include:
Your assessor will work with you and your employer to ensure you can demonstrate competence across the required range of electrical installation activities.
Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, the qualification can be claimed and certificated.

Yes. The City & Guilds 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification replaces the legacy 2357 NVQ and is aligned to the current Installation and Maintenance Electrician Occupational Standard.
The NVQ Pathway Qualification is the industry term commonly used for the City & Guilds 5357 qualification. It is the recognised occupational competence route for learners progressing towards Qualified Electrician status.
Yes. Most learners and employers still refer to the qualification as an Electrical NVQ, although industry bodies increasingly use the term NVQ Pathway Qualification.
Yes. The qualification requires workplace evidence and assessment activity. You must be working within the electrical industry and have access to suitable installation work.
Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for learners progressing from recognised electrical qualifications such as the City & Guilds 2365.
The 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment was originally developed around a previous apprenticeship framework that no longer fully reflects the structure of modern electrical training.
The 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification is a development route for learners building competence in industry.
Learners should generally plan on a two-year journey. Previous industry experience may be considered where appropriate evidence exists.
Potentially. Learners with significant previous industry experience may be considered for earlier progression, subject to evidence and approval through the quality assurance process.
The requirement has been introduced to ensure learners gain sufficient practical experience within the workplace before progressing to the final competence assessment.
The AM2P is the final competence assessment associated with the 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification route.
No. The AM2P is booked separately through a NET-approved assessment centre and is not included within the qualification fee.
The gateway application is the process used to confirm eligibility for the AM2P assessment. This must be submitted to your chosen NET-approved centre before your assessment can be booked.
Learners are responsible for ensuring that both qualification completion and gateway submission take place within the required timescales. Failure to do so may affect progression and require further discussion with the assessment centre.
The 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification and successful completion of the AM2P form part of the recognised route towards ECS Gold Card eligibility.
Funding opportunities may be available depending on your age, employment status and circumstances. Please speak to one of our course advisors for current information.
We would normally recommend completing your Level 2 and Level 3 electrical qualifications and securing relevant employment before applying for the 5357 NVQ Pathway Qualification.
Possibly not. Learners with substantial industry experience may be better suited to the City & Guilds 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment. Our team can help determine the most appropriate route based on your experience.
