Who is this route for?
This route is designed for highly experienced electricians who:
- Have significant industry experience (typically 10+ years)
- Are currently working in the electrical industry
- Do not hold a Level 2 electrical qualification
All candidates must complete an Initial Assessment (IA) where eligibility is reviewed. Not all applicants will be approved for this route.
How the process works
- Initial Assessment (IA)
- Your experience is reviewed by our NVQ team
- Approval for Entry Exam
- Approved → proceed to exam
- Not approved → complete Level 2 route
- Book and sit the Entry Exam
- Delivered in-centre under invigilated conditions
- Progress to EWA
- Once passed, enrol onto the EWA

About the Entry Exam
- Multiple-choice assessment
- 55 questions
- 1 hour 30 minutes
- Pass mark: ~60%
- Open book (BS 7671 & IET On-Site Guide permitted)
What you will be assessed on
The exam covers core electrical knowledge including:
- Health & safety and legislation
- Installation methods and wiring systems
- Electrical principles and calculations
- Supply systems, earthing and protection
- Electrical components and circuits
- Electrical design principles
- Safe isolation
- Inspection, testing and commissioning
- Application of BS 7671 and industry guidance
Test Windows (Important)
Exams must be taken within fixed testing windows:>
2026 Windows
- 1 May – 28 May
- 1 July – 31 July
- 1 September – 30 September
- 2 November – 30 November
2027 Windows
- 1 February – 26 February
- 3 May – 28 May
- 1 July – 30 July
- 1 September – 30 September
- 2 November – 30 November
You will be booked onto a set exam date within one of these windows.
Attempts and Resits
- Maximum of 3 attempts
- All attempts (including resits) must be completed within the same testing window
This means:
- You must allow enough time for up to two resits
- You should aim to sit your first attempt as early as possible
Resit Fees
- £70 per resit
- (£25 City & Guilds fee + £45 admin fee)
Resits must:
- Be booked through our team
- Be taken in-centre
- Be completed within the same testing window
If you run out of time, you may need to wait until the next window.
What happens if you don’t pass?
- After 1–2 attempts → resit within window
- After 3 attempts → wait 12 months or complete Level 2
After you pass
- Enrol onto the EWA
- Assigned an assessor
- Must start within 6 months
Additional qualifications
You may still need:
- Wiring Regulations (18th Edition)
- Level 3 Inspection & Testing
These must be completed before certification.
